Itsekiri Triumph as Delta Peace and Unity Cup Ends in Style

By Delta Event News

Orerokpe town was abuzz with excitement on Sunday, December 8, as sports enthusiasts, royal dignitaries, and former Nigerian internationals gathered for the grand finale of the 2024 maiden edition of the Delta Peace and Unity Cup. The event, hosted at the Baptist High School Field, attracted a diverse audience, including representatives from professional bodies such as the Ijaw Publishers' Forum (IPF).

The competition, organized by Comrade Sheriff Mulade, celebrated the spirit of peace and unity among Deltans and featured thrilling football matches.

The Final Showdown

The day began with the Third-Place match between Team Urhobo and Team Isoko, setting the stage for the main event. The much-anticipated final match saw Team Itsekiri (Ugbomarun FC) face off against Team Ndokwa (Ndokwa East United FC). Although the final was slated to kick off at 2:00 PM, delays pushed the match to a 3:20 PM start.

Team Itsekiri wasted no time making their mark, scoring just five minutes into the game. However, Team Ndokwa equalized in the 21st minute, restoring the competitive energy. Itsekiri regained the lead with a goal in the 36th minute, closing the first half with a 2-1 advantage.

The second half saw both teams battling fiercely, but it was Team Itsekiri that sealed their victory with a dramatic goal in the 89th minute, ending the match 3-1.

Celebration of Unity

The final whistle marked the conclusion of the inaugural edition of the Delta Peace and Unity Cup, a tournament designed to foster camaraderie among the diverse ethnic groups in Delta State. The event was graced by notable figures, including the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom and representatives of the Ogulagha Kingdom.

Comrade Sheriff Mulade, the visionary behind the tournament, expressed his gratitude to participants and spectators. He extended an invitation to the general public to join the post-match reception at the Africa 4 Peace Games Village and Event Center in Ugolo, near Osubi.

The Delta Peace and Unity Cup not only highlighted the region's rich football talent but also reinforced the message of unity and collaboration among Deltans. As Orerokpe town bid farewell to the tournament, the spirit of sportsmanship and community remained alive, promising an even more exciting edition in the years to come.
