Workers from host communities operating in OML42, Jones Creek, have embarked on a peaceful protest, shutting down operations to demand better welfare and the regularisation of their employment by the Joint Partnership Management Team (JPMT).

The protesting workers lamented that they have been subjected to poor treatment, casualisation, and low wages despite their years of dedicated service. They noted that their top demands include salary increment and permanent employment, which they described as long overdue.

According to reports, the protest was triggered by the failure of the company’s management to honour an agreement reached with the workers two weeks ago. That agreement had earlier averted a similar protest in August, following the intervention of host community chairmen and other key stakeholders.

However, the situation escalated when workers discovered that site management allegedly forwarded a false report to the company’s head office, attempting to trivialise their legitimate grievances and paint them in a bad light.

It took the timely intervention of military personnel stationed at the facility to prevent a breakdown of law and order. The security team assured the workers that a dialogue meeting between management and staff would soon be convened to resolve the crisis.

The workers, however, insisted that they are suffering under harsh conditions and urged the Federal Government, the Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil and Gas), and the GCEO of NNPCL to urgently intervene and ensure their concerns are addressed.

As of the time of filing this report, no official statement has been issued by the oil company’s management. The workers maintained that their peaceful protest would continue until all agreements are fully implemented and their demands met.
