Delta University: Mulade Calls for Ijaw Vice-Chancellor Appointment

By Delta Event News

A Delta-born Ijaw leader, Chief Mulade Sheriff, PhD, has appealed to Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to consider appointing an Ijaw academic as the next Vice-Chancellor of Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba.

Mulade said the appeal was informed by concerns over what he described as the absence of Ijaw representation in the leadership of state-owned universities, despite the ethnic group’s contributions to the establishment and development of the institutions.

He noted that no person of Ijaw extraction has served as Vice-Chancellor or held any principal officer position in the newly established universities in the state, adding that the situation has continued to generate concerns among stakeholders.

According to him, the Ijaw ethnic nationality has several qualified professors with strong academic credentials, administrative experience, and professional integrity capable of occupying the position.

The Ibe-Sorimowei of the ancient Gbaramatu Kingdom stated that Ijaw representatives were members of the Management Council involved in the process that led to the establishment of the universities and also contributed to the development of Southern Delta University.

He said appointing an Ijaw Vice-Chancellor would help promote inclusivity, address perceived marginalisation, and strengthen a sense of belonging among the Ijaw people within the state’s educational system.

Mulade therefore urged the state government to ensure fairness and broad representation in future appointments to leadership positions in state-owned tertiary institutions.
