INC Election Put on Hold as Court Orders Internal Resolution
By Delta Event News
The leadership contest within the Ijaw National Congress has taken a new turn following a directive from the Rivers State High Court ordering that the dispute surrounding the congress election be referred to the organization’s Internal Dispute Resolution Committee.
In addition to the earlier injunction issued by the court, the judge directed that the Internal Dispute Resolution Committee be given seven days to mediate and attempt to resolve the issues internally. The move is aimed at encouraging reconciliation among stakeholders within the Ijaw apex socio-cultural body.
According to the court ruling, if the parties involved are able to reach a settlement through the internal process, the court may abridge the time scheduled for further hearing.
However, if the dispute remains unresolved after the internal mediation period, the case will return to court, where all pending applications will be heard on March 18, 2026, at the High Court in Port Harcourt.
INC Leadership Reacts
Reacting to the development, the President of the Ijaw National Congress confirmed that consultations and negotiations are currently ongoing among key stakeholders in an effort to resolve the issues surrounding the election process.
Sources within the congress disclosed that discussions are being held to find a peaceful and acceptable solution that will maintain unity and stability within the organization.
A Critical Moment for the INC
The unfolding situation has placed the leadership transition of the INC at a crucial stage.
As the foremost socio-cultural body representing the interests of the Ijaw people across the Niger Delta, the organization plays a significant role in championing issues such as regional development, environmental justice, and the protection of the political interests of the Ijaw ethnic nationality.
Observers say the outcome of the dispute is expected to attract significant attention from stakeholders across the Niger Delta region.
What Happens Next
With the court’s interim order now in place, attention has shifted to the Internal Dispute Resolution Committee, which has been given seven days to mediate and resolve the disagreement.
Should the parties fail to reach an agreement through the internal mechanism, the matter will return before the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt on March 18, 2026, where the legal process will continue.
For now, the leadership contest within the Ijaw National Congress remains in suspense, as both legal proceedings and internal consultations continue simultaneously.
